Ingredients

  • 450g dried chestnuts
  • 175g sugar
  • 50g drinking chocolate
  • 50g dark chocolate
  • Grated rind of 1 orange
  • Grated rind of 1 tangerine
  • Mixed spice
  • Cloves
  • Water

Instructions

  1. Wash the chestnuts thoroughly. Place them in a large bowl and cover them with water. Leave to soak overnight.
  2. Next day, remove any loose pieces of skin.
  3. Add chestnuts into a deep pot.
  4. Add sugar, drinking chocolate, dark chocolate, orange rind, tangerine rind, mixed spice, and cloves.
  5. Add enough water to cover the ingredients.
  6. Bring to a boil.
  7. Continue cooking at medium heat for about 45 minutes.
  8. Chestnuts should be tender; if not, continue cooking until done, making sure to top up with water if the mixture starts to dry.
  9. Serve hot.
